About

I'm Shannon, a third year BA Hons History of Art and Design student at the University of Brighton. I picked my degree having no idea what I wanted to do with it in the end. I went back and forth on which pathway was right for me and ultimately, decided on HOAD because I simply love art so why wouldn't I want to learn more about it? (the fact Prince William and Kate Middleton also did it at uni may have also been a contributing factor!) Although not everything has been my cup of tea, I definitely do not regret my choice! I have learnt more about culture, society, design and history than I could have imagined and now am hoping to share some of my knowledge.

My degree pathway was grouped together with three others: Visual Culture, Fashion and Dress History and Politics, Philosophy and Art. Due to this, I have had the chance to learn about a plethora of different subject areas outside of just typical art and design history which has been immensely valuable to me and my experience as a student. This has included, film, economics, politics, fashion design, fashion history, cultural practices and so much more.

During these three years and especially since COVID hit, I have grown increasingly aware of the competitive nature of the arts industry and just how difficult it is to get a foot in the door of many jobs in the field. That's why I have created Read Between the Designs. I've decided to make a name for myself and put myself and my work out there. Here, I will be sharing my uni work, general writings and opinions and anything discussion worthy that takes my fancy!

Some things you can expect to see are my university essays on varied topics, me talking about social issues that impact me as a student or future arts worker, film reviews and recommendations, artworks and projects I enjoy and want to spotlight and basically all things History of Art!
